This study set out to investigate the importance of vocabulary among students of the English Language Major at the University of Quintana Roo, Mexico; i.e., beliefs, attitudes and vocabulary learning strategies and the possible relationship among these three main variables. The participants were 79 students divided into five groups; each one representing one year of language study at university. The instruments were the vocabulary levels test (VLT) by Schmitt (2001); a questionnaire about beliefs, attitudes and vocabulary learning strategies, and selected learner interviews.
